GUGULETHU, SOUTH AFRICA

The energetic community of Gugs, better known as Gugulethu, lies virtually on top of Cape Town’s International airport, about 20 kilometres outside of Cape Town -

one of the oldest black townships in South Africa.

Gugulethu has been described as a combination of vibrant life, poverty, disease and violence.

It was originally named Nyanga West and was established to help accommodate the many migrant workers who moved to Cape Town from the rural Transkei in the Eastern Cape.

The name is a contraction of igugu lethu, which is Xhosa for our pride.
